Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie

Bewitched (1964-1972) and I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970)

While Bewitched is the queerer of the two shows, I still loved both of them. I think it was because I always loved to watch people pop in and out through magic and cast wonderful spells...I think I still would like that. At the same time, who can resist the tinkatinkatee of Samantha's nose and Jeannie's blink?

Bewitched (1964-1972)

I always wondered why Darrin Stephens (Dick York and later Dick Sargent) would want to stiffle his wife Samantha's (Elizabeth Montgomery) use of her powers.

The great thing about Bewitched were all the colorful people of Samantha's family that wandered in and out of the little house at 1164 Morning Glory Circle. Endora, Samantha's mother played by Agnes Morehead, gave mother-in-law a new name with her constant meddling. The wonderfully flamboyant Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde) not only gave Bewitched it's queer edge, but also added much humor and fun. The quirky Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) and unconfident Esmerelda (Alice Ghostly) were always providing laughs bumbling through their spells. The theatric Maurice, Samantha's father played by Maurice Evans, was either supporting his daughter or making havoc for his son-in-law. Lookalike cousin Serena (also played by Montgomery) always causing trouble. And who would ever forget the cry, "Calling Dr. Bombay, Calling Dr. Bombay...Come right away!"

And then there were the mere mortals -- Larry and Louise Tate (David White and Kasey Rogers), nosey Gladys Kravitz (Sandra Gould) and her husband Abner (George Tobias) and the parade of clients from McMahon and Tate.

I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970)

I Dream of Jeannie was definitely a straight man's show. Here was this scantily clad woman with inmense power (Jeannie, played by Barbara Eden) who wanted to grant her male master his ever wish and fantasy. Although, one would wonder about the sexual orientation of master Major Anthony Nelson (Larry Hagman) who was always trying to avoid Jeannie's advances.

But, despite the more testosterone charged feel of Jeannie, I loved the show. Again, I kept thinking of how wonderful it would be to have my very own Jeannie.

Well intentioned but not very focused Major Roger Healey (Bill Daily) was always trying to get his friend out of trouble, while causing more of his own. At the same time, nosey NASA psychiatrist Dr. Alfred Bellows (Hayden Rorke) brought additional fun to the program.
