Absolutely Fabulous (1992-1996) "You can never have enough hats, glove and shoes... These were the sage words of Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), one of the two pill-popping, booze-drinking, crass women who stole our hearts when British import Absolutely Fabulous hit American television. The other, of course, is the wonderful drama queen Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders), with whom I most relate. Throw in wholier than thou daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), the subtley bitchy mother (June Whitfield), an airheaded assistant named Bubble (Jane Horrocks) and a couple of ex-husbands, and you have one of the funniest shows on television.
The Vicar of Dibley (1994-present) I happened to be flipping through the channels late one night and stopped on PBS when I saw one of my favorite comedians, Dawn French, dressed in religious frock. I had to see what was going on. I'm so glad that I did because what I saw was one of the most hilarious shows I've ever seen. What makes this show so great is not only the wonderfully sardonic wit of Dawn French, but the superb and loveable cast of character. The show centers around the Dibley parish council who finds that the new vicar of the town is a woman. Stalwart conservative David Horton serves as the foil for French's Vicar Geraldine Grainger (Gary Waldhorn) while his akward son Hugo (James Fleet) romances the equally akward Alice (Emma Chambers). The parish consists of always-stuck-in-the-minutiae Frank Pickle (John Bluthal), loves-his-animals-too-much shepard Owen Nesbitt (Roger Lloyd Pack), yes-yes-yes-yes Jim Trott (Trevor Peacock) and local culinary "genius" Letitia Cropley (Liz Smith).
