Loren's Top 10 Movies
1. Gilda (1946) |
This film is what I often refer to my "therapy film," as I cannot watch it without sobbing hysterically and reaching somewhere back into my childhood. Adapted from Amy Tan's bestselling novel, The Joy Luck Club is a wonderful tale of women not only dealing with the generation gap, but a cultural gap as well. The daughters learn to understand what sacrifices their mothers made for them while the mothers learn how placing their hopes and dreams on their children affected their lives. Ming Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Lauren Tom, Rosalind Chao, Tsai Chin, Frances Nuyen and Lisa Lu head the superb cast. Aside from being a wonderful film, it is an excellent representation of Asian American lives. MANAA (Media Action Network for Asian Americans) notes that the film is "arguably the first Asian American Hollywood movie of the sound era." Its a shame and conspicuous that the film received no Academy Award nominations. 1993, Directed by Wayne Wang
