Loren's Top 10 Movies
1. Gilda (1946) |
This is truly the best screen musical I have ever seen! While its a wonderful children's film, the movie, based on the childrens book by P.L. Travers, is also extremely entertaining for adults as well. The story, of course, is about the proper British Banks family -- banker Mr. Banks (David Tomlinson), womens suffragette activist Mrs. Banks (Glynis Johns) and children Jane and Michael Banks (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber) -- whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of Mary Poppins, a magical nanny who is "practically pefect in every way." Mary Poppins not only takes the children on an outing in a sidewalk painting with screever Bert (Dick Van Dyke) or to a tea party on the ceiling with Uncle Albert (Ed Wynn), but also shows Mr. and Mrs. Banks that all Jane and Michael want is some attention and love. While many dismiss songs such as "Supercalifrigalisticexpialidocious" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee" as silly childrens songs and "Stay Awake" and "Feed the Birds" as simple lullabies, they are actually poignant pieces to the story. The music is the best works of Richard and Robert Sherman. Julie Andrews received an Academy Award for her performance. 1964, Directed by Robert Stevenson.
