Loren's Top 10 Movies
1. Gilda (1946) |
The perenial "weepy" movie, this 1937 classic offers one of the best performances from Barbara Stanwyck. Stanwyck plays the title character Stella Dallas, a woman who tries to better her station in life by social climbing and marrying millionaire-in-hiding Stephen Dallas (John Boles). While Stella and Stephen cannot make their marriage work, there is no question to the love of their daughter Laurel (Anne Shirley). Although Laurel could ultimately have a better life with her father, Stella will not give up her child...until, she realizes that she is only dragging her daughter down. So, in a selfless act of love, Stella lets her daughter go. The last scene of the movie is one of the best I've ever seen and one of the most beautifully acted. Stanwyck was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in this film...but, alas, she did not win. 1937, Directed by King Vidor.
