The Tracey Ullman Show (1987-1990)
Tracey Ullman is one of the best comedians I know. Like French & Saunders, she is highly skilled at bringing observations into her comedy. The Tracey Ullman show featured Julie Kavner, Dan Castellaneta and Sam McMurray. The show also debuted one of America's favorite animated families The Simpsons which served as amusing little bumpers. They proved to be so popular that they were given their own television show. In addition to the one-shot skits, The Tracey Ullman Show included such memorable characters and little Francesca who is being raised by two gay dads, the socially challenged Kay and the stoic psychiatrist Dr. Gibson. Tracey Takes On... (1996-present) She struck gold with The Tracey Ullman Show...and she strikes it again with Tracey Takes On.... In the spirit of her original late 80s show, Tracey Ullman plays various characters on this HBO show...but, instead of being loose skit comedy, she uses the characters to delve into such issues as romance, love, fantasy, obsession, dating, and so on. Some of her great characters include Hollywood makeup artiste Ruby Romaine, Boca Rotan retiree Fern Rosenthal, seasoned performer Linda Granger, mentally challenged caregiver and bankteller Kay Clark, extremely scummy taxi driver Chic, power attorner Sydney Kross, shy college student Hope Finch, devout christian Birdie Godsen and spiritual advisor and nutritionist Chris Warner, lesbian life partner to pro-golfer Midge Dexter
