1. Gilda (1946) |
A wonderful coming out story told from an Asian American perspective! The film, known as Hsi Yen in Taiwan, revolves around businessman Wei-Tung (Winston Chao) whose family in Taiwan is desperately trying to find him a bride. The only thing is that Wei-Tung is gay and shares a home with his lover Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein). So, to get his parents off his back, Simon tells Wei-Tung to pretend that he is getting married. The plan backfires when his parents decide to fly to the United States to meet the bride. So, the two involve Wei-Wei (Taiwanese superstar May Chin), an artist who lives in a tenament owned by Wei-Tung and who is in need of a green card. The three realize that living a lie is a much more difficult thing as all learn about love, commitment and redefining family values. Veteran Chinese actors Ah Lei Gua and Sihung Lung are excellent as Wei-Tung's mother and father. MANAA (Media Action Network for Asian Americans) notes about the film, "This sitcommish plot could have easily degenerated into a feeble farce. Instead, it poignantly contemplates the meaning of love, family, and commitment--all in the context of Asian America. This U.S.-Taiwan co-production is one of the most richly human comedies of the decade." The Wedding Banquet also received a GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Award om 1994. 1993, Directed by Ang Lee
