There are very few animated films with Asian or Asian Pacific American themes. In fact, it took Disney over 60 years to release a film that revolved around Asian characters (Mulan). Yes, The Jungle Book, which featured the South Asian Mowgli, was released in 1967, but the story was told from a British perspective. Hopefully, with the popularity of Mulan, more Asian and APA films will be created...

Mulan was the first Asian legend done in animated form by an American animation company. It was truly a triumph that showed Disney had not lost it (prior to Mulan, it released three films that fared badly in the box office). The tale of finding yourself and following your dreams was equally appealing to both boys and girls. Marketing was great for this film with high quality action figures, dolls and happy meal toys...

THE JUNGLE BOOK
Written by Rudyard Kipling, the story takes place somewhere in India and involves a young Indian baby raised in the wilds by animals. While the popularity (and therefore toys) was in Mowgli's beast friends, there were a few happy meal toys made in Mowgli's image. Check it out...
