Dragonball Z

Dragonball Z was created by Akira Toriyama, known for his whimsical style and unique storytelling. And, Dragonball Z is certainly that. In fact, I get totally confused when I think about it...eventhough, ultimately, I like it. For years, Dragonball Z had been a popular manga and anime in Japan and then was imported and popularized here by the Cartoon Network's Toonami lineup. It is the story of a young man named Goku who meets a young woman named Bulma. Bulma is collecting Dragon Balls so she can get her wish of having a boyfriend. Goku decides to help her and the rest is history, with crazy and strange adventures along the way, involving space aliens and time travel. You really have to watch the show religiously in order for it to make any sense. But, it is alot of fun...and the toys, which Irwin releases, are wonderful adaptations of the anime characters. Up until Series 14 of the 5" figures, the Irwin toys were basically repackages of what was imported from Japan. However, starting with series 14, the figures were created with new molds for American audiences. Not to worry, they still have the quality and wonderful charm of their Japanese cousins.

Super Saiyan Goku 3 Super Saiyan Goku 3
Dragonball Z action figure line - series 10
1999, Irwin Toy
Dragonball Z
Individual Figure

Okay, remember how I said this is confusing...well, Goku, in his normal state has black hair. While Goku was raised on Earth, he's actually from the planet Vegita and was born to a race of people called the Saiyans who had monkey tails. Because of this, he has certain powers. One of which is to evolve into a Super Saiyan. This toy represents the 3rd and most powerful Saiyan stage, which . Oh, as for the black hair...apparently, once a Saiyan goes Super Saiyan, the hair becomes blonde and they lose their eyebrows. This is all I'm really going to say...if you want more info on Super Saiyans, I would recommend Zombie's Super Saiyan Page. It's got lots of interesting tidbits.

As for the figure, a nice sculpt with little (only 4) points of articulation. But, again, it looks great and is a faithful adaptation to the anime character. He comes with a sword scabbard and a dragon ball.

Bulma
Dragonball Z action figure line - series 14 (Freiza Saga)
2000, Irwin Toy
Dragonball Z
Individual Figure

Bulma is one of the few female characters of the Dragonball Z world. But, she's been around for quite awhile. In fact, in the original story, Bulma is a teenager who is looking for the Dragon Balls so that she can find a boyfriend. By the Dragonball Z series, however, she had already grown up. She is a great mechanic and can not only fix things, but figure out the importance of mechanical objects. For example, she was able to figure out how to use the Saiyan Scouter to their fullest advantage.

This figure is the first figure adaptation of Bulma that I've seen (although, I may be wrong). She comes in the 14th Series of 5" Dragonball Z figures. Series 14 is the first series that has molds created for U.S. markets (and not repackaged Japanese imports). Like all the Dragonball Z molds, she is a very faithful adaptation of the two dimensional character. She comes with the Ginyu Frog.

Chiaotzu Chiaotzu
Dragonball Z action figure line - series 15 (Saiyan Saga)
2000, Irwin Toy
Dragonball Z
Individual Figure

Chiaotzu is a cute little character with a white face and somewhat Chinese dress. He is a faithful companion to Tien and has mental powers, such as telepathy and ESP. He tired to send Nappa into another dimension by grabbing hold of his back, but his plan failed...and Chiaotzu ended up in the other direction.

The figure is adorable and looks great. A wonderful adaptation of the anime chaaracter. He comes with removable hat. A nice paint job that gives him the same innocence that he has on the show. Like other figures after Series 14, this figure (from Series 15) was created with a mold made in the U.S.

Yajirobe
Dragonball Z action figure line - series 15 (Saiyan Saga)
2000, Irwin Toy
Dragonball Z
Individual Figure

Yajirobe is a traveling monk who befriends Goku on one of his journeys. He's a good ally, but tries to stay away from danger.

One again, another great adaptation. The sculpt and paint is perfect, from the creases in his robe to the heaviness of his eyebrows. He comes with his companion Korin, a cat weilding a staff (and another great mold). Like other figures after Series 14, this figure (from Series 15) was created with a mold made in the U.S.

Chi Chi Chi Chi
Dragonball Z action figure line - series 16 (Saiyan Saga)
2000, Irwin Toy
Dragonball Z
Individual Figure

Chi Chi is the wife of Goku, the main character in the Dragonball Z series. She is also the mother of both Gohan and Goten. While she loves her husband and two children, she also believes that Gohan and Goten should be using their brains rather than fighting. This often brings conflict into the family.

The figure is a good sculpt of the character, but very simple. She comes with no accessories and her costume is rather plain. Of the new lines that have been coming out, she is perhaps the least interesting. Like other figures after Series 14, this figure (from Series 16) was created with a mold made in the U.S.
